Cooperative Law summer school 2025

12 Sep 2025

The second Global Cooperative Law Summer School, hosted by the Juraj Dobrilla University’s Faculty of Economics and Tourism in August in Pula, Croatia, brought together nearly 50 participants from 20 countries, with additional colleagues joining online.

Organised by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the International Centre for Co-operative Management at St. Mary’s University (Canada), the course was led by Prof. Hagen Henry, Chair of the ICA Cooperative Law Committee.

Over five days, participants explored how cooperative principles and values can be translated into legal rules and practices worldwide and examined the challenges lawmakers and regulators face in shaping effective cooperative law.

“The Summer School addressed the question of how, through legislation that respects the internationally recognised cooperative principles, cooperatives can and must align their practices on the legal principle of sustainable development”, said Prof. Henry

“We were honoured to have friends from the ILO Coop and SSE Unit and the FAO as classmates in the 2025 ICA Coop Law Summer school,” said the ICA’s Director of Policy, Santosh Kumar. “We are thrilled to reinforce our partnership and commitment to promoting and advancing adequate legal rules for the development of cooperatives.”
