Cooperatives Europe calls on the EU to implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda

27 Jun 2016

Cooperatives Europe is calling on the European Union (EU) to adopt an overarching strategy to guide the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

The European regional office of the International Co-operative Alliance has joined the call of SDG Watch Europe by signing an open letter sent to the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, highlighting the EU’s little progress since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Agenda in November 2015. The letter adds that some actions have been taken on the external dimension through the work of Commissioner Neven Mimica and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini. However, it argues that all services of the European Union with regard to tackling global challenges must act in a coordinated way.

The letter is also urging the Commission’s president to “launch a transparent and inclusive public consultation on the implementation of the whole 2030 Agenda”.

“The EU is traditionally reputed to be a leader in sustainable development – we hope you will maintain that reputation,” reads the document. SDG Watch is a European cross-sectoral civil society alliance, set up when the 2030 Agenda was adopted in September 2015, in order to monitor its implementation.
